It’s never too late for student life

Are you thinking about enrolling in a third-level course but feel like you might be too long in the tooth? Fear not! Adult learners can (and do) thrive in university settings.

The joys of learning

Whether you’re planning to change careers or pursue academic passions, going back to university as an adult learner can be a hugely enriching and fulfilling experience. Furthermore, it’s good for you! Research by the British Government indicates that adults who keep learning enjoy better health. They are also more active in civic life, more productive and have better-paid jobs. As an expat partner, this might also be the most ideal time to sign up for some third-level studies. Indeed, if going to university is truly your chosen path, the question might be, well, if not now, when?

You can do it!

It’s perhaps rather counterintuitive that we tend to see our advanced age as a hindrance rather than an advantage when it comes to study. Rest assured your brain does work! Sure, it might take time to get into your scholarly groove again, and that first assignment might be a slog. But as an adult learner, the good news is you are likely to have better organisational skills and discipline than many younger students. Are there some additional course-related skills that might help you strengthen any weaknesses? If so, perhaps you can upskill in advance of starting the university syllabus. If it’s already started, don’t panic! You just have to set aside time for each facet of learning.

Don’t be shy…

It’s also true that some adult learners can be shy when it comes to interacting with students half their age. They might dismiss themselves as old fogies and isolate themselves from their academic peers. But intergenerational classes are more dynamic with younger and older students learning from each other as they share skills, knowledge and perspectives. So don’t be shy. You’ll literally be an asset to any course you choose!

Still on the fence?

If you’re still unsure, we recommend discussing your scholarly ambitions with one of our consultants (and perhaps an education coach). For further encouragement, you could also read Never Too Late: The Adult Student’s Guide to College, described as a “smart, snappy, and comprehensive guide for the millions of adults who are thinking about going – or going back – to college and want to know how to do it right.”
