A safety net for relocation

In recent years expat partner Rita Lopes has had to overcome some personal challenges, including a major health scare, but she explains why she has never hesitated to relocate.

Time of silence

“I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at the end of 2019, when we were living in Belgium for the second time. I had to have surgery in January 2020. It was a time of silence as I couldn’t speak. I love to sing and talk so this was particularly challenging for me! But I grew a lot as a human in this period of introspection,” says Rita, a native of Lisbon who has three kids, now aged 13, 11 and 8. As a family they have also lived in Houston and now reside in Sao Paulo.

The right balance

“Looking back, I realised that I was pushing myself too much. I was living in Brussels, but studying in Liege. My husband was travelling a lot for work in those days, and as a mother of three kids, I had a lot on my plate. After my surgery, I knew I had to slow down and get the balance right in my life. Sometimes we think we can be superheroes!” says Rita, a former civil engineer who is now a passionate painter.

A secure decision

“Still, I didn’t hesitate about moving to Brazil. Whenever we relocate, my family back in Lisbon always worries about us. But I know that my husband’s employer supports everyone, so I feel very secure about making the decision to leave. It was difficult for the kids to say goodbye to friends and their school. Relocating was easier when they were younger! It also took a while for them to settle into this new life. But we love Sao Paulo. Brazilians are so welcoming and chatty. They talk to you like they knew you all their lives! That has helped us to feel at home.”

‘I feel stronger’

“It was also very beneficial for me to speak with Anelise Schroeder, my Global Connection consultant, and later on a coach. Whether it was to discuss my concerns, or plans for the future, I appreciate having this kind of support which helps me and my family to adjust. I feel stronger as a person from going through the process of relocation. For me, it’s always an opportunity to learn more about yourself and grow.”
